The start of anything new always brings excitement. Opportunities to achieve your goals. The start of the NFL season is no different. There is no sports league in the world that thrives on creating as much parity in order to create an atmosphere between all involved, the fans, the coaches, the players, and the ownership that you go into Week 1 with the feeling, “This could be our year.” Of course, we know that’s not realistic because there can only be eight division winners. We can only have two conference winners. Lastly, there can only be one Super Bowl Champion.
Well, that’s why they created sports betting because no matter what your personal feelings may be about the team you support. Win or lose. You can always make some money at others’ expenses, and we are here to give you some trends to look at before turning in those tickets.
My colleagues here at MMG and I will also be picking 6 games each week this year with the stipulation they can pick which 5 best they feel good about, but everyone must pick the MNF game. We will keep track and come back each week for a quick analysis and choose to follow or fade the guys.
Betting Notes and Trends
- In 2021, NFL underdogs won 37% of games straight up, the highest rate since 2015. Week 1 of the 2021 season gave us 12 covers by underdogs.
- Bill Belichick going to Miami usually doesn’t go well for him. He’s almost as welcomed of a guest as other Patriots staff in Florida, but that’s neither here nor there. The Pats are 2-7 in their last nine visits to. Miami. The Dolphins are 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS in the previous four openers between these teams.
- Mike Tomlin is 14-6 ATS and 11-9 SU as a road underdog against AFC North opponents during his career. The Steelers are 6.5- point underdogs vs. the Bengals in Week 1.
- Thomas Edward Patrick Brady, Jr. loves being a road favorite. He is 65-41 ATS and 88-32 (73%) as a starter as a road favorite. The Bucs go to Jerry’s world as a 2.5-point favorite for Sunday Night Football.
- The Browns haven’t won a Week 1 game since 2004. They are 0-16-1 SU in that span. The Panthers host the Browns in a matchup where many Vegas books have it as a pick’em.
